Charles William “Bill” Shroyer, a veteran of World War II, recently recalled surviving the sinking of the USS Neches, a tanker which was en route to Wake Island to refuel air craft carriers, The Saratoga and The Lexington. The USS Neches was hit by three Japanese torpedoes about a month after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Approximately 56 men lost their lives when the USS Neches was hit, Shroyer said.
