MT. VERNON —
A limited amount of funds are available for at-risk, low income households through the Summer Energy Assistance program.
According to Crosswalk Community Action Agency, which administers the program, a small amount of grant funds were made available on Monday, and appointments will be distributed Wednesday starting at 7 a.m. at the Illinois Department of Human Services, 333 Potomac Blvd., Suite F, Mt. Vernon.
“Since the availability of funding is very limited, assistance will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis,” information states.
“Assistance will include utility payments for electric service only and you must be the customer of record at your electric company,” information continues. “There are no funds available for disconnected households. The LIHEAP Summer Energy Assistance Program is targeted to at-risk households, defined as households with at least one resident age 60 or older, or at least one resident drawing disability income, or at least one resident four years of age or younger, or at least one resident with a current physician documented medical condition that can be improved by air-conditioning, such as asthma, emphysema, coronary disease or immediate terminal illness.”
To qualify, households must have an income level of equal to or less than 150 percent of the poverty level. Gross income for the household, 30 days prior to the date of application must not exceed $1,396 for one person; $1,396 for two people; $2,386 for three people; and $2,881 for four and is graduated higher for larger households.
To make an appointment for the Summer Energy Assistance Program, you must go to the appointment location in the county.
