MT. VERNON —
My apologies.
In a recent column, I was incorrect about the date of WolfStock 2010. The correct date is Sept. 18.
Also, since I missed last week, this week’s column contains information from the last two weeks. So, here we go.
One of the best parts of what I do occurs when I have the opportunity to record one of our area’s musical acts when they are in their favorite element, on stage at one of our numerous local venues.
For the second week in a row, your intrepid correspondent traveled extensively to obtain precious digital files that were heard on the radio on Sunday, July 11, and are now archived for you on the MS Web site.
For this show, the drive wasn’t as far. I only had to make my way to beautiful downtown Mt. Vernon to The Crossing on South Ninth St.
My thanks to Linda Lowery of The Crossing for all of her help. She didn’t complain at all when I started dragging in my handful of equipment.
Man, I love modern technology!
My original plan was to record King City band, Tommy Gunn, which consists of Billy Kniffen, Greg Lundius and Dan Lynch.
Mission accomplished. Check out their excellent covers, as well as TG originals, like “Come inside” and “Kathy Fay.”
Genkota Winery will host The Midsummer Night’s Dream on Friday, Aug. 6, at 311 N. 44th St. in Mt. Vernon. The evening will begin at 7 p.m. and feature an almost completely “unplugged” Tommy Gunn.
TG is normally known as an electric blues/rock band, so an almost all-acoustic version is a curiosity that rarely comes around.
TG will welcome King City blues guitarist Mike Herzing (Southern Illinois Spring Thaw All Stars, King City Blues Band, Solo), for a couple of sets and maybe the four of them will be able to perform together.
You may recall that the four were joined on stage at the 2010 Spring Thaw by Steve “Moon” Mullins and Steve Davis, performing as the “Spring Thaw All Stars.”
The All Stars had a memorable performance of “One Meatball,” a blues tune written by Dave Von Ronk in the 1960s.
You can acquaint yourself with Tommy Gunn and Mike Herzing by logging on to http://musicallyspeaking.mvn.net
Each of the shows had their own special moments. I’ll leave it up to you to decide what you think. You will also find Tommy Gunn and Mike Herzing music available for your listening pleasure.
Over the last few weeks, Brian Alvis and Rob Whisenhunt have been putting in some serious time recording each and every moment of the weekly Open Mic Night at the Tavern on 10th in downtown Mt. Vernon.
The establishment has been hosting the revival of what used to be (think 1970’s and 80’s) a staple of local entertainment here in the King City, since fall of 2009.
This past Sunday night (July 18), Musically Speaking aired an hour of music from those shows, as well as interviews with Alvis and Whisenhunt.
“Open mic night started out pretty slow,” said Alvis, the manager at T10, as well as a musician himself. “But, it’s been building.”
Well, it seems to have built up a pretty good head of steam now.
“Basically, we just had so many good open-mic artists,” Alvis said. “We knew that we needed to get this stuff on tape.”
If you are a fan of local area music, you’ll appreciate listening to the show.
Check it out on the ‘net.
Alvis and Whisenhunt have planned to present some of those artists at T10 during their Local Music Showcase Aug. 6 .
This week on the radio, you’ll hear music from the Benefit for Ashton Ilberry, held on July 23 at T10.
The Bradley Peters Band, Doc Jones and Jam Sammich (John Scrivner, Ian Presswood, Gerald Keene, Daniel LeMay and Jake Schofield) will be featured.
South of 70 (with Hack Harbor strumming the banjo) was at Mack’s Marina on Lake of Egypt on July 17. We will also have some music that show as well.
If you haven’t given Musically Speaking a listen yet, please give it a try, either on the radio or on the World Wide Web.
