MT. VERNON — Molly Rodgers of Bethel Grade School was chosen Tuesday afternoon as the overall winner of the 2010 City Wide Cleanup Poster Contest.

Rodgers’ entry was chosen from a field of 322 entries from Bethel Grade School, Summersville Grade School, J.L. Buford Intermediate Center and Comprehensive Services of Jefferson County. Judges for the contest were Mt. Vernon Mayor Mary Jane Chesley, City Councilwoman Mary Burgan, Human Resources Director Mary Jo Pemberton, Tourism Director Bonnie Jerdon and Mayor and City Manager Administrative Assistant Jane Tate.

“I love the variety,” Chesley said as she judged the posters. “Some are happy, picking up trash, and there’s even one with a tank declaring war against litter. I like the way they have different ideas about how to keep Mt. Vernon clean. That means they have been thinking about it.”

Winners were chosen from each school that submitted, and Rodgers’ poster will be featured on the front of 1,000 tie-dyed City Wide Cleanup T-shirts. Winners from each school earned their homeroom class a pizza party, and a first-place trophy.

Rodgers not only took overall winner honors, but first place for Bethel Grade School, which has won the City Wide Cleanup for the past four years by collecting the most bags of trash during the event. This year’s cleanup will be held the first Saturday in May. Rodgers’ winning poster featured the Granada Theater for the Performing Arts, with an American flag in the background, “Making Mt. Vernon Shine” lit up the theater marquee, and trash and recycling bins appear in front of the doors on the sidewalk.

“I think a lot of children have clever and creative ways to express ‘Making Mt. Vernon Shine,’” Burgan commented. “It’s overwhelming looking at all the depictions of how they see it in their head. It’s darling.”

First-place winners from participating schools were Emily Glowicki from Summersville Grade School; Bert from Comprehensive Services; and Elizabeth Wood from J.L. Buford Intermediate Center.
