UPDATE: Victim identified in fatal train/vehicle accident
JEFFERSON COUNTY —
The victim of a fatal train/vehicle accident Tuesday in rural Jefferson County has been identified.
Phillip Beeson, 56, of Cisne, died as result of the accident at approximately 11:33 a.m. Tuesday. According to Jefferson County Sheriff Roger Mulch, witnesses reported Beeson was eastbound on Holiday Road and pulled into the path of a southbound Canadian National train. The train’s engineer was unable to stop, striking the driver’s side front door of Beeson’s vehicle.
The train pushed the vehicle approximately one-sixth of a mile before coming to a stop near East Heartland Road.
Beeson was reportedly deceased inside the vehicle upon arrival of rescue personnel.
A number of local authorities responded to the scene, among them the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois State Police, Jefferson County Fire Protection District rescue personnel, Webber Township Fire rescue personnel, Orchardville Fire personnel and Litton’s Ambulance as well as Jefferson County coroner Eddie Joe Marks.
Mulch said the crossing where the accident took place was clearly marked and posted with a yield sign.
