One dead in interstate accident

MT. VERNON — One person is dead and another injured after a crash of Interstate 57 Friday morning.

According to information from Jefferson Fire Protection District, an out-of-state vehicle sustained major damage to its driver’s side when it collided with a semi-truck just south of the north split on Interstate 57/64 while in the south-bound lanes. The driver of the Saab died as a result of his injuries. The accident was reported at 10:31 a.m. Friday morning.

A passenger in the vehicle was taken to Crossroads Community Hospital for treatment of injuries. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

The accident is being handled by the Illinois State Police. Additional information about the accident is unavailable at this time.
