Those recently elected in Jefferson County will be sworn in at the beginning of December.
County Clerk and Recorder Connie Simmons said the offices of circuit clerk, state’s attorney, treasurer and coroner will be sworn in Saturday, Dec. 1, but the judge of circuit court and new 13-member Jefferson County Board will be sworn in Dec. 3.
Simmons said there were no problems with any of the county’s 33 precincts on election day. She said because of the redistricting reducing the County Board from 15 districts to 13, however, there were many phone calls from confused voters.
When the new board members are sworn in during their organizational meeting at 9 a.m. Dec. 3, they will also vote to choose the chairman and vice chairman, said Jefferson County Board Executive Assistant Suzy Tate.
The first week of committee meetings will be conducted as committees of the whole, meaning all board members will attend, Tate added; the county board chairman will assign committees to the board members the evening of the full county board meeting.
Recently-elected individuals to be sworn in are: Circuit Clerk, John Scott; State’s Attorney, Douglas Hoffman; Coroner, Eddie Joe Marks; Treasurer, Dan Knox; County Board District 1, Steve Draege; County Board District 2, Joey McDermott; County Board District 3, Tommy Hayes; County Board District 4, John Keele; County Board District 5, Randy Jay Edwards; County Board District 6, Jeff L. Williams; County Board District 7, Jim Laird; County Board District 8, Don Rector; County Board District 9, Robert White; County Board District 10, Robert Watt; County Board District 11, Jeremy Hall; County Board District 12, Wayne Hicks; County Board District 13, James Malone; and Judge of Circuit Court, Jo Beth Weber, according to information provided by the county clerk’s office.
Hoffman was appointed in late November of last year, after Nicole Villani left the position to begin serving as resident circuit judge. He stated then that his work would be a “one-year audition to let the voters decide.”
“I was extremely happy in the confidence the voters showed in the job I’ve been doing as state’s attorney,” he said. “...Last week’s results showed I passed that audition with flying colors. It’s an honor and a privilege to be given the opportunity to continue to serve. I pledge to do my best to continue to get the job done.”
He said his focus will be to keep doing what the office is doing, “because it’s been working,” especially with a focus on violent repeat offenders and the county’s case backlog.
Knox is the other county official to be reelected after being appointed to fill the vacancy left by former Treasurer Debbie Elliott Marlow.
“I was really, really humbled by the fact so many people supported me at the polls,” he said. “I’m very thankful God’s given me the opportunity to be a part of public service.”
He said Marlow’s support of him during the election was extremely helpful.
“The margin of 3,800 votes between me and my opponent encouraged me, because it shows me the majority of the voters think the things I’m doing are the right direction,” he said.
He said moving forward, he and the treasurer’s office will continue to look for ways to be more cost effective with real estate tax bills, as well as eliminating all possibility of fraud.
