MT. VERNON —
Winter heating energy assistance appointments for regular households will begin Thursday, Nov. 1.
The Crosswalk Community Action Agency will administer the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program for Jefferson, Franklin and Williamson counties.
The program provides financial assistance to eligible households to help pay a portion of their winter heating bills.
Eligibility is based on gross income for the 30 days prior to the date of application and is $1,396 for a one-person household, $1,891 for two-person households, $2,386 for three-person households and $2,881 for four-person households, information states.
The applicant must be the customer of record at the utility company. The first step to receive energy assistance is to visit the outreach site in the county of residence and make an appointment so an application can be made at a later date.
The outreach location in Jefferson County is the Illinois Department of Human Services at 333 Potomac Blvd., Suite F., Mt. Vernon, 244-4858.
Appointments will start being distributed on Thursday, Nov. 1 on a first-come, first-serve basis. If it is not possible to be at the outreach site on Nov. 1, there will still be appointments available and those eligible can still go to the location in their county from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and receive an appointment. It is recommended that only one person per household should come to make an appointment, in order to make the line shorter and provide faster service.
Appointments are being scheduled 30 to 60 days ahead. Crosswalk Community Action Agency has a tremendous amount of households needing assistance this year, therefore clients may be given an appointment for after the first part of January 2013.
Any eligible household that is disconnected from their utility or who is at or below 25 percent on a delivered fuel and cannot get a delivery on their own may qualify for emergency reconnection assistance.
