MT. VERNON — —
A gift in memory of one of the original members of a local organization supporting troops was bestowed to family members on Saturday at the Veterans Monument at Veterans Memorial Park.
Elbert and Brenda Cain of Mt. Vernon presented an American flag to the family of Joyce Poorman, who died last month. The Cains received the flag from their son, Ramon Moss, who is stationed in Qatar.
"My son received his second gift card from the Jefferson County Iraqi Freedom because he was born here in Jefferson County," explained Brenda Cain. "He knew Mrs. Poorman played an important role in the Jefferson County group. He wanted to give something to the family because he understood that she couldn't have done it without her husband (Harold) so he wanted to present it to the family as a token of his appreciation." Harold Poorman died a few days after his wife.
Moss, a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, is serving his third term in Qatar, some 45 minutes out in the desert.
"He was in Iraq when he received his first gift card from JCOIF, and then he went to Afghanistan," Cain said. "He'll be home in 15 days. We're counting down the days."
Troy Poorman, a major with the Missouri National Guard, accepted the flag on behalf of the family.
"We appreciate this from the Cains, and we appreciate what my mother did for the troops. She knew that people at home thought of them a lot, and the gift card program helped the troops who were deployed," Poorman said.
"It all started because I deployed to Iraq in 2004. That is what encouraged my mother and David (Keen) to start the whole thing. It's gotten really big and we're happy we can get troops coming back that appreciate the work of the committee," he added.
The Poormans owned and operated J.P. Trophies in Woodlawn. She was the co-founder of JCOIF, for which she received the American Soldier Award from Sen. John O. Jones. She was named a Jefferson County Senior Saint and received the Chamber's Citizen of the Year Award in 2009-2010. Joyce Poorman was active in the Chamber, along with the Delta Theta Tau Sorority in Woodlawn, the Business & Professional Women of Mt. Vernon and a volunteer of Chapman Sports Complex.
