County-wide boil-water order lifted Wednesday

MT. VERNON — Residents in Jefferson County are no longer under a boil-water order after testing of the water supply for Rend Lake Conservancy District and the city came back as safe on Wednesday.

A boil order was issued Monday night for all customers of the Rend Lake Conservancy District after a water main broke just east of the water plant — a line that provides water to the distributions lines that serve all customers in Southern Illinois. According to RLCD Assistant Manager Larry Sanders, the district did not expect the boil order to be lifted until Thursday, but results of water testing from Monday and Tuesday came back earlier than expected.

“Luckily, we do not have this type of thing happen frequently,” Sanders said. “We had the test results back sooner than expected, and they showed there is no risk to the public.”

Sanders said although the district lifted the boil order, testing is still required of the municipalities it serves and communities still have to lift the boil order.

“We know Mt. Vernon and their customers have lifted the boil orders,” Sanders said. “We also know that because of the amount of water which is stored at all times by Mt. Vernon, they were able to delay issuing a boil order for 12 hours.”

Those water districts which have been released by the boil order by RLCD include Akin Water District, the City of Benton, Village of Bonnie, Village of Buckner, City of Cambria, City of Carterville, City of Christopher, Village of Colp, Village of Crainville, Village of Dahlgren, City of DuQuoin, Ewing-Ina Water District, Ferges Water District, City of Galatia, Greenwood Creek Water District, Hamilton County Water District, Village of Hanaford, City of Herrin, Highway 37 North Water District, Hill City Water District, City of Johnston City, City of Macedonia, City of Marion, City of McLeansboro, City of Mt. Vernon, Mulkeytown Water District, Royalton Water District, City of Sesser, Village of Tamaroa, Village of Thompsonville, City of Valier, Washington County Water District, Village of West City, City of West Frankfort and City of Ziegler.

“We are now going to look at what we can learn from this,” Sanders said.

Mt. Vernon Police blocked a portion of North Ninth Street Wednesday morning about 11 a.m. after reports the brick facade of the apartment building at the corner of Ninth and Maple streets was falling to the ground. The bricks took out cable lines, awnings and were landing on the street.
