MT. VERNON — — More than 40 Special Olympics Illinois athletes strapped on their snowshoes at Veterans Park on Saturday for the Special Olympics Illinois Southern Region district competition. Preliminary competition was held in the morning, and the finals were held in the afternoon for 50 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter snowshoe runs, said Carolyn Klocek, representative for the southern region. Those who medaled Saturday will be eligible for the Winter Games, held in Galina at the end of the month.
