MT. VERNON — — Traffic was backed up for several miles in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64, east of the Woodlawn exit on Thursday following a single-vehicle accident. The driver apparently lost control and ran off the south side of the road before hitting a tree. The unidentified motorist was taken to a local hospital, complaining of a neck injury, according to officials from Jefferson Fire Protection District, who responded to the accident. A dog, which was in the vehicle, was picked up by officials from the Jefferson County Animal Shelter for safekeeping. Illinois State Police is investigating the crash.
