MT. VERNON — —
Two men are in custody following a shooting incident Thursday evening in the south section of the city.
According to a report from the Mt. Vernon Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of 21st Street and Conger Avenue for a report of gunshots fired shortly before 8 p.m.
Upon arrival to the area officers made contact with a suspect, 21-year-old Simon Taylor, and located a handgun and shell casings nearby. Another caller reported seeing a van that was believed to have been involved in the initial incident parked in a yard in the area of 13th Street and Perkins Avenue. Officers responded to that location and attempted to make contact with two subjects in the yard.
Police state one subject, Kenyon Johnson, 32, fled on foot but was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit. Both men have addresses in the 700 block of South 21st Street, according to jail records.
Detectives and a crime scene technician responded to interview witnesses and process evidence. After a further investigation, Taylor and Johnson were charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card.
Taylor and Johnson were taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center where they await the setting of bond and first appearance court hearings, according to a jail spokesman.
