The Knights of Columbus is welcoming in the season of Lent with a fish fry on Fridays with proceeds to benefit local charities.
According to member Nick Schrementi, the fish fry is held for traditional and charitable reasons.
"Lent, for Catholics, is a period of fasting and we don't eat meat on Friday," Schrementi explained. "It's traditional to do a fish fry during Lent and on Ash Wednesday. That's one reason we do it, but we use the fish fry proceeds to raise funds for local charities in the Southern Illinois area and for our church."
The fish fry will be held starting this Friday with proceeds to benefit the St. Mary Church maintenance fund, earmarked to replace air conditioning units in the parish center.
The fish fry will be held Feb. 22, March 1, March 8 and March 22, with no fry scheduled on March 15.
"Next week, the fish fry will be for Jefferson County (Court Appointed Special Advocates)," Schrementi said. "The following week is for Lifeboat Alliance and the week after that, Mentors 4 Kids. On the 22nd, proceeds will be for the Knights of Columbus for our roof. Our meeting space is in need of roof repairs."
Each fish fry will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the St. Mary Parish Center gym.
The menu will include fried fish, shrimp, French fries, hush puppies, macaroni and cheese, green beans, corn, salad, dessert and tea or lemonade. For those who can't have fish, there will be a limited supply of spaghetti available.
Tickets are available from members of Jefferson County CASA, Lifeboat Alliance and Knights of Columbus members. Tickets will be available at the door. Tickets cost $9 for adults, $6 for children and fish by the pound can be purchased for $9 per pound.
"The majority of profits from the fish fry go to local charities," Schrementi said. "One of our main values as Knights of Columbus is charity. These are three charities we feel are vital to our community and we give them as much support as we can."
