Additional weatherization assistance available

Assistance with home weatherization is now available to homeowners on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Crosswalk Community Action Agency is receiving additional funding for the 2012 Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program for Franklin, Jefferson and Williamson Counties.

Analisa Woods, CCAA weatherization assistant, said the agency has been chosen to receive leftover funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and will hopefully be able to serve about 100 more homeowners with the home weatherization program.

The first step to receive weatherization is to visit the outreach site and make an appointment, with an application being made at a later date, information states.

Woods said on the sign-up day, those who attend will receive a slip with a time and date to return with

documentation of their home ownership for the application.

“After we collect the information and verify it, we set up an appointment for the assessor to come out to the home,” she said. “We take measurements of all the windows and doors, check out the heating source, clean and tune it or replace it.”

She said the assessment includes a process to determine where air may be leaking into the house, and then a work order is drawn up for caulking and weather stripping.

The program provides weatherization assistance to income-eligible households and makes homes more energy efficient, information states.

Eligibility is based on gross annual income, with a one-member family earning $21,660; a two-member family, $29,140; a three-member family, $36,620; and a four-member family, $44,100.

The sign-up date for the 2012 program year will be 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Illinois Department of Employment Security, 33 Potomac Boulevard, Suite E., Mt. Vernon.

Appointments will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Due to the volume of people, it’s recommended that only one person per household come to make an appointment, information states. The person who comes to the sign-up day does not have to be the homeowner, Woods said, but must have the name, phone number and address of the homeowner.
