MT. VERNON — From December 2009 through the end of February 2010, the county received almost $1.1 million in tax receipts, down $328 thousand from the same time period in the previous year.
The fiscal year for Jefferson County began Dec. 1, and tax receipts through Feb. 28 have been received. Taxes collected are the 1/4 percent sales tax, the one percent sales tax, the public safety tax, income tax and local use tax.
In February, tax receipts for the 1/4 percent sales tax came in at $97,418.77, compared to $89,945.42 in February of last year, with an increase of $7,473.35; the county received $51,007.40 in tax receipts for the one percent sales tax in February, compared to $47,481.56 last year, an increase of $3,525.84; for the public safety tax, the county received $82,072.25 in February 2010, compared to $150,813.08 in the same month in 2009, a decrease of $68,740.83; and the county received $14,624.44 in receipts from the local use tax in February 2010 compared to $19,546.67, a decrease of $4,922.23.
The public safety tax decreased so drastically compared to other changes because 1/4 percent of the tax rate was retired effective July 1, 2009.
Of the taxes received, the state income tax and the state sales tax are considered to be shared revenues — the taxes are collected statewide, then disbursed based on population and are considered an indicator of the economic conditions state-wide rather than locally.
From Dec. 1 to Feb. 28, 2010, the county received $288,630.86 in receipts from the 1/4 percent sales tax, compared to $289,713.63 during the same time period in the Dec. 2008 - Nov. 2009 fiscal year, a decrease of $1,082.77; the county received $145,598.75 in receipts from the one percent sales tax from December through February 2010, compared to $174,903.07 during the same time period in the previous fiscal year for a decrease of $29,304.32; the county received $252,735.87 in receipts from the public safety tax through the beginning of the fiscal year, compared to $486,026.07 from the same time period the previous year, for a decrease of $233,290.20; for the income tax, the county received $348,428.55, compared to $377,618.08 from the same time during the previous fiscal year, for a decrease of $29,189.53; and for the local use tax, the county received $47,888.62 in tax receipts, compared to $64,216.63 during the same time period in the previous year, for a decrease of $16,328.01.
