MT. VERNON —
Road work has suspended for the winter on the South 34th Street widening project.
“They will come back when the weather breaks,” City Engineer Scot Prindiville said. “It will be weather dependent on when they start back up, but we are expecting it to be sometime in March.”
Under terms of the construction contract, the project must be completed before July, Prindiville said. At this time, the project has been completed to just south of South Water Tower Place.
“Currently, there are some barricades up just south of there, that say road closed to through traffic,” Prindiville said. “That’s where it goes from the new, wider roadway back down to the narrow roadway. We don’t want to open the road completely up due to safety concerns. Through traffic still should not be used for the road, but emergency vehicles will still be able to drive through it. Traffic should turn at South Water Tower Place. We still need to finish from where the pavement ends to Veterans Memorial Drive.”
Prindiville said on the new portions of the roadway, everything is completed for this year except for permanent striping on the street.
“There will be bike lanes on that roadway, but they are not striped yet,” Prindiville explained. “For current safety issues, there is a temporary dashed line on the road which will be removed next year when the permanent striping is put in.”
The driveways and mailboxes for the finished portion of the project have been restored, and Prindiville said grass has been seeded, but needs to grow in. In addition to the new roadway, a new storm sewer has been put in.
“A lot of the area was drained by ditches,” Prindiville said. “New storm sewers have been put in that should help with previous drainage problems.”
