The first classes for lifeguards who want to be eligible to work at the Aquatics Zoo next summer will start on Saturday.
The facility will utilize the StarGuard Lifeguard Certification program — with Mt. Vernon designated as a Starfish Aquatics Institute — a program described by Mt. Vernon Parks and Facilities Director George Bryant as a holistics approach to teaching lifeguards.
“SAI brings a hands on holistic approach to teaching lifeguard staff,” Bryant said. “The StarGuard program also addresses our desire to partner with an association which is solely focused on aquatic certification, instruction, risk management and internal audits.”
New lifeguards who will be registering for the program will face a total cost of $105. Skills classes will be held at the Rend Lake College Natatorum on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Students can register now through Dec. 27 at the parks office, located at 800 S. 27th St., in the Rolland W. Lewis Community Building at Veterans Park.
StarGuard certification is effective for one year. Those who renew their StarGuard certification will not be required to purchase new books each year.
Lifeguards must be at least 16 years of age, and those 15 years of age taking the class may register only with the instructor’s approval. Passing the course does not guarantee the individual will be hired but only those with the certification will be considered by employment at the Aquatic Zoo, Bryant said. Participants are urged to register for classes as soon as possible so there is time to successfully complete the online training requirements.
