Granada to host Black Friday Bash

MT. VERNON — — Working off the pounds from Thanksgiving will be easy to accomplish Friday night at the Granada Center for the Arts Black Friday Bash.

Barb D’Arcy said the Granada board was contacted by three local bands, Pumphouse Monster, American Lion and Freezer Whisky, about doing a show and the board decided to sponsor them on the Friday night after Thanksgiving. She said she thinks it will be a really good show.

“They really wanted to put a show together. I think they will be playing a lot of favorites, a lot of covers the crowd can get into,” D’Arcy said. “All three of these bands played at Wolfstock this year and drew a lot of attention.”

She said all three of the bands are in the same genre with a strong classic rock/hard rock and roll sound. Each band will get even playing time, about 45 minutes a set.

“I think its going to be great opportunity for people to get out and work off their Thanksgiving dinner. We thought that we would offer some entertainment,” she said, adding there are a lot of people who are home or visiting for Thanksgiving who may be looking for something to do.

Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $5 per person. The show will begin at 8 p.m. and last until around 11 p.m. It is an all-ages show, but anyone buying alcohol must have a valid ID.

The money from the show will go towards the continuing renovation work at the Granada, D’Arcy said. The roof of the Granada is being replaced in the spring, which D’Arcy said is a major construction job.

There are renovations going on inside the building as well. The board is working with local contractors to open up an entryway into the building south of the theater, which is part of the structure. There are plans in the works to open a lounge area in that space and there will also be sinks and counter space put in so events held in the Granada can use the space for prep work.

The Granada board is also working with Lowes and received grant money from the company that will help with updating the electrical wiring, service boxes and outlets in the theater lobby.

She also said the next installment of the Granada Kids Classic Matinee series will be held on Dec. 1. Children, accompanied by an adult, can come watch “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and then head out to the parade downtown at 5:30 p.m.

Mt. Vernon Police blocked a portion of North Ninth Street Wednesday morning about 11 a.m. after reports the brick facade of the apartment building at the corner of Ninth and Maple streets was falling to the ground. The bricks took out cable lines, awnings and were landing on the street.
