Members of Jefferson County Operation Iraqi Freedom, along with members of the community and family plan to gather at Veterans Memorial Park to honor their departed friend, mother and wife, Judii York.
York died Wednesday, Nov. 14. She was a special education teacher, later became the director of the special education department and moved on the becoming a principal for Mt. Vernon City Schools, District 80. York was also principal of Lincoln School, principal of Hall School, was a teacher and administrator through the Central Office of Education of District 80 until she retired in 1994.
York was involved in many local organizations, including the District 80 Foundation, the Mt. Vernon Junior Women’s Club, Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association, the Ladies of Mt. Vernon Elks BPOE Lodge 819 and member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon.
David Keen, a fellow member of Jefferson County Operation Iraqi Freedom, said the group wanted to do something special to honor York’s memory. It was decided a memorial brick would be placed in her honor at the Mt. Vernon Veteran’s Park Monument.
“Judii was a enthusiastic supporter of the JCOIF Team and headed our education fundraising,” Keen explained, adding York was an integral part of the organizations she was a part of. “We are asking for the entire public to come out and those who knew her to come and pay their respects.”
The memorial brick will read: Dr. Judii York, JCOIF Committee Member, Friend of Veterans, Top of Form, Keen said. The service will be held Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
Keen said JCOIF is going to set aside a special section for Operation Iraqi Freedom members. The brick for York will be the first one placed in the section.
“Judii was a very special lady,” he said. “It’s just something special, since she was such a hard worker and big part of raising funds for projects. She was such a big help to veterans and we thought it would be something that would mean a lot to her.”
