MT. VERNON — —
Treasurer Angela Brentlinger said the state of Illinois still owes the school money for many funds during an update on the Mt. Vernon Township High School budget at the MVTHS Fiscal Committee meeting.
The state still owes MVTHS thousands in special education, transportation, and other monies, which have yet to be paid for the 2013 fiscal year.
“We haven’t received any of that money from the state yet for (Fiscal Year) ‘13,” she said.
Brentlinger also explained that revenue for the high school is down by $100,000 compared to last year and expenditures were up, but some of that is due to some construction and maintenance costs for the existing high school.
Overall, the budget looks like it is right on target, according to both MVTH Superintendent Mike Smith and Brentlinger.
The MVTHS tax levy will be voted on during its next board meeting. The high school is asking for a 6 percent increase for the 2012 property tax levy.
The estimated total property taxes to be levied for 2012 are $8.68 million, compared to the total property taxes extended or abated in 2011, at $8.19 million. MVTHS seeks a 8.27 percent increase in corporate and special purpose property taxes for 2012, Smith said.
The district seeks $8.7 million for the 2012 levy. Based on last year’s received tax amounts, the district is likely to receive $517,000 less than it is requesting.
There will be a Truth in Taxation hearing at 7 p.m. at the Dec. 17 MVTHS Board of Education meeting in order to discuss the levies. Anyone wishing to appear and speak before the taxing district may contact Smith at 246-5908.
