MT. VERNON —
The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency is looking for amateur radio operators willing to be part of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service.
RACES is made up of amateur radio operators who volunteer time, skill and equipment to provide communication during declared emergencies. The organization is sponsored by local and state emergency management agencies and supported by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. As a part of RACES, members become part of the local EMA, and those operators in Jefferson County would be part of the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency and supplement its emergency communications capability.
Jefferson County RACES members will operate the amateur radio equipment in the new emergency operations center and other sites as required during an emergency.
Jefferson County EMA is looking for local amateur and ham radio operators who would like to become part of RACES and work with the EMA. Those interested in finding out more about RACES are encouraged to attend the open house today from 1 to 6 p.m. at the new emergency operations center and speak with RACES officer Wayne Sampson.
Information is also available by contacting Sampson at 244-3194.
