Early voting scheduled until April 16

MT. VERNON — — Registered voters in Jefferson County may not vote in-person absentee for the April 9 Consolidated Election.

"Early voting will start March 25," said County Clerk and Recorder Connie Simmons. "Early voting will go until April 6. If you vote in-person absentee or early voting, you just have to come to the courthouse and be sure to have a photo ID with you and you can vote."

Simmons reminds voters they don't have to provide a reason for absentee voting any more. However, once a resident has voted during absentee or early voting, they can't show up at the polls on April 9 and vote.

"Once you vote absentee, you are marked on the list and you are done," Simmons said. "If you (vote absentee) by mail, and don't return your ballot to the office, you can take the ballot to your polling place and turn it in to the judges, and they will take it and you can vote there. Or, if you didn't receive your mailed ballot for absentee voting, you can go to the polls and the judges will call the office to check and see if a ballot was received. We will check if the ballot was received in the office, and then you could vote."

Candidates on the ballot this election include:

City of Mt. Vernon — Mary Jane Chesley is running unopposed for mayor; Jerilee Hopkins is running unopposed for city clerk; Doris Stover and Mary Jo Pemberton are running for city treasurer; Dennis McEnaney, Donte Moore, David Morgan, Todd Piper and write-in candidate Steven Casper are running for two council seats. Voters will cast two votes.

Village of Woodlawn —

Charles McNealy and Brian Spangler are running for mayor; Marcia Tinsley is running unopposed for village clerk; Tim Loss, William "Bill" Shega and Joe Eckelberry are running for three village trustee positions.

Village of Belle Rive — Kimberly McCormick is running unopposed for village president; Doris Mallory is running unopposed for village clerk; and two are running for village trustee with three seats available, William E. Cross and Delmar Short.

Village of Bonnie — Raymond Sackman, Cory Lee Breeze and LaKaela Jonhson, also known as LaKaela Blankenship are running for two seats for village trustee two year term; Jimmie Strain, Glenn Claytor and Larry Funkhouse are running for three village trustee seats available for full terms.

Village of Ina — Andy M. Hutchens is running unopposed for mayor/president; Mary Beth Bowers is running unopposed for village clerk; JoAnn Joy, Walter Grimes, Bobbie L. "Bob" Sheridan and Michelle Sigwerth are running for three village trustee seats for full terms.

City of Nason — no one is running for mayor; Lori L. Graham is running unopposed for city clerk; Linda Allison is running unopposed for city treasurer; Charles O. Taitt is running unopposed for alderman in Ward 1; Brian K. Hays is running unopposed for alderman in Ward 2; Travis D. Graham is running unopposed in Ward 3.

Village of Dix — Michelle Springer is running unopposed for village clerk; Larry Springer, Sharon S. Bean, Phil Pittman, Charles H. Burge and Darrell W. Hungate are running for three village trustee seats.

Village of Bluford — Willard L. Baker and Michael R. Bullard are running for village trustee. There are three seats available.

Village of Waltonville — Randy Dees is running unopposed as village president; there is no candidate filed for village treasurer; no candidate has filed for village clerk; and two candidates have filed for three open village trustee seats, Chloe Dulaney and Mike Kuhner.

Mt. Vernon Police blocked a portion of North Ninth Street Wednesday morning about 11 a.m. after reports the brick facade of the apartment building at the corner of Ninth and Maple streets was falling to the ground. The bricks took out cable lines, awnings and were landing on the street.
