MT. VERNON —
The Mt. Vernon Post Office will host a passport fair on July 23 at its retail office.
The local post office will join 105 other locations in southern and central Illinois and northeastern and central Missouri to host the event. The fair will be held during normal business hours on the day to accommodate working customers, elementary, high school and college students as well as those who find it convenient to visit the Post Office on Saturday, according to information from the U.S. Postal Service.
“Passport applicants must apply in person so many customers, especially families with children, appreciate the convenience of Saturday hours,” said Loretta Tolliver, manager customer relations for the Gateway District of the U.S. Post Service. “With just one visit to the Post Office, the passport application process can be completed.”
Those who apply for passports must provide the “Application for Passport” form DS-11. To save time, the form may be downloaded from the USPS Web site, www.usps.com/passport for completion before arriving at the post office. The form will also be available at the passport fair.
Applicants, including infants, must provide proof of U.S. citizenship: A previous U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate issued by a city, county or state, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Certification of Birth, or a Naturalization Certificate of Citizenship. A picture ID is also required. More information is available at www.travel.state.gove/passport.
Tolliver also recommends those needing a passport should visit the Post Office as early as possible to obtain one — at least two months prior to departure — to avoid extra costs involved in expediting the application.
