Good Sam offers community tours

The tours of the new hospital campus will be held Saturday and Sunday

MT. VERNON — — Community tours of the new Good Samaritan Regional Health Center will be held this weekend.

The new hospital campus, a $237 million regional health center, will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6. These visitors will be among the first to see inside the new state-of-the-art facility, information states.

“When we set out to build a new Regional Health Center, we wanted to build a facility that promoted a healing environment and provided state-of-the-art health care to Southern Illinois — we can’t wait to share it with the community,” said Victoria Woodrow, PR/marketing director of Good Samaritan Regional Health Center.

The new Good Samaritan Regional Health Center is located on Veterans Memorial Drive next to the new I-57/I-64 interchange. The five-floor hospital holds 134 beds, eight observation beds, all-private rooms and numerous advanced patient safety features, information states. The hospital also includes greatly expanded Emergency Care services, a Women’s Center and a Procedure Center.

Part open house and part guided tour, the Community Open Houses invite the visitors to see areas of the hospital normally off-limits to the public, such as operating room, catheterization labs, and more, information states.

Staff will be on hand at key areas of the hospital and Medical Plaza to answer questions and guide visitors through featured locations, such as an expanded emergency department, all-private patient rooms, the Women’s Center, fireplace-furnished family lounges, a two-story water wall, stained glass artwork located in the hospital chapel, physician offices in the Medical Plaza and more, information states.

Throughout the new hospital, visitors will find the influence of nature in the hospital’s decor, information states. There are hundreds of photographs of nature submitted by local amateur photographers donning the walls of the facility. A collaboration with Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon and Good Samaritan identified regional artists to create special, one-of-a-kind pieces of art for the new facility. From sculptures to landscapes, the artwork inside and the healing garden surrounding the Health Center are designed to promote a calm, relaxing atmosphere, information states.

Families are encouraged to attend and complimentary refreshments will be served.

Mt. Vernon Police blocked a portion of North Ninth Street Wednesday morning about 11 a.m. after reports the brick facade of the apartment building at the corner of Ninth and Maple streets was falling to the ground. The bricks took out cable lines, awnings and were landing on the street.
