Board appoints Kistner

INA — — Angie Kistner was appointed as Vice President of Finance & Administration at Rend Lake College during a meeting of the Board of Trustees held Tuesday night at the college.

Kistner's appointment is effective March 1 at a prorated annual salary of $103,000.

The position was vacated by the retirement of Bob Carlock, who previously held the position. Trustees accepted Carlock's resignation, effective June 30, with regret.

"We appreciate everything you've done. This time we were in a bind and the circumstances of our chief financial officer and a very vital position we have here at the college. You came back and helped us, and we appreciate it. You've done a great job," said  Chairman Bryan Drew.

"It was a lot more fun working with you guy the second time," Carlock said. "If you fired me, I still had a retirement," he joked. "It's a great place to work. I like everybody that works here. It's a rare thing you can say that. I couldn't have chosen a better career for myself."

Carlock had served as the college's chief financial officer from 1986 to 2008 and retired the first time. He returned in 2010 and worked the final three years of his nearly 25 years of service.

Kistner is a graduate of Rend Lake College and Eastern Illinois University. She was formerly the Business Office Financial Affairs Coordinator at the college from 1999 through 2003, and has served as controller since 2003 under Carlock.

Trustees also approved the transfer of Wendy Smith to the position of controller from her previous position as the business office accountant. That position will remain vacant, information states. Smith will be paid an annual salary of $70,000 prorated for the remainder of the year, effective March 1.

Trustees ratified the appointment of Donald McBride as a mining technology instructor at an annual salary of $75,000 prorated for the remainder of the fiscal year, effective pending State of Illinois approval of the Revolving Door Policy. Information states this position is needed to meet demands due to the recent resurgence of the mining industry in the district and surrounding area. McBride most recently served as a mine safety division manager for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. He was also a repairman for seven years for the Bushy Creek Coal Co.

In other business, the board:

n Approved a bid of $28,923 from Premium Mechanical and Automation of Jackson, Mo., for HVAC control upgrades at the Rend Lake Marketplace was approved. The equipment will be funded by Public Health Safety levy funds;

n Approved a bid of $16,566 from Vaughn's Roofing Inc. of Marion was accepted to reroof the Children's Center. Five bids were received with Vaughan's submitted the lowest bid; and

n Announced Haden Smith, an ag business student from Wayne City, as the new student trustee. Smith assumes his duties in April, it was reported.

Mt. Vernon Police blocked a portion of North Ninth Street Wednesday morning about 11 a.m. after reports the brick facade of the apartment building at the corner of Ninth and Maple streets was falling to the ground. The bricks took out cable lines, awnings and were landing on the street.
