Volunteers are being sought for the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is looking for volunteers to participate in the program for the 2013 monitoring season. The program has been going on for more than 30 years, using information from volunteer boating enthusiasts and sports fishermen. In 2012, there were 16 lakes in Southern Illinois monitored by local volunteers.
Since 1981, the Greater Egypt Regional Planning and Development Commission has coordinated the program, which provides fundamental data to the IEPA on the health and well-being of the lakes of Southern Illinois. The information gathered by volunteers is used to identify critical problems within a lake such as fish population issues, pollution control, erosion control, algal blooms and the identification and control of invasive species. The IEPA relies heavily on volunteers for this data that would otherwise be unattainable.
Volunteers will be trained by the Southern Illinois regional coordinator, Travis Taylor. All equipment and materials needed to gather data will be supplied by the IEPA. The volunteer needs only to have available a boat with an anchor and the time to monitor the lake of their choice. Volunteers then collect data each month from May through October and mail the prepaid data forms to the Southern Illinois regional coordinator.
