Nationally known speaker to address MVTHS, residents

MT. VERNON — Mt. Vernon Township High School will be hosting a town meeting to allow residents to hear nationally known speaker Louis Martinez on Tuesday.

“We’ve been very fortunate to secure Dr. Louis Martinez for these meetings,” MVTHS Superintendent Terry Milt told members of the school board Tuesday night. “He will be able to address all the students on apathy and conduct a teacher inservice training on Nov. 28. We wanted to capitalize as much as we could and get him here to speak.”

Milt said Martinez is known worldwide for his teachings on how to build relationships and carry them forward to increase learning potential and increase test scores.

Martinez is the senior consultant for the International Center for Leadership in Education. According to information from the center, Martinez will be able to illustrate how relationships in schools of character focus on performance in addition to beliefs.

“Schools which have well-thought-out practices to promote positive performance and beliefs throughout the structure of delivery of instruction and interpersonal relationships are successful,” information about Martinez states. Martinez discusses high expectations for learning, codes of conduct and discipline, co-curricular programs, parents as partners and attention to overall school environment. The goal of Martinez’ teachings is to help schools, parents and communities create a professional learning community around positive relationships in addition to rigor and relevance.

The town hall meeting, open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 27 in the MVTHS auditorium.
