Lions Club sorts eyeglasses

Mt. Vernon Lions collect used eyeglasses from several locations within the community. The club sorted 2,227 metal and 1,412 plastic, plus a number of used hearing aids, at their Sept. 17 meeting. Recycled eyeglasses are given to people in need, with the help of various medical missionaries, in Central and South America. Doctors and technicians conduct eye exams and provide a free pair of prescription eyeglasses. There are no fees for screening or the eyeglasses the needy receive. Mt. Vernon Lions have been collecting used eyeglasses for the Foundation program since 1994. This is one way Lions have answered the challenge of Helen Keller when she asked Lions to "aid in the fight against blindness.”
