RLCD leasing question on ballot

BENTON — Voters in Jefferson and Franklin counties will be asked next week whether the Rend Lake Conservancy District should seek private development on public land.
The question reads: “Do you want the Rend Lake Conservancy District to enter into long-term leases for the private development of public recreation and commercial facilities (such as marinas, restaurants, shops, water park, walking trails, parks, fishing piers, amusement, or entertainment amenities) and short-term/long-term leasing facilities (such as cabins, cottages, hotels, condominiums or campgrounds) on the unused property in the Gun Creek area?”
In January 2007, the RLCD Board began to explore ways to use almost 1,000 acres of land that has not been developed. Most of the land is located in the Gun Creek area, and in July 2007, the board heard a proposal from CornerStone Development for a four-phase development plan for the area.
The plan included a combination of residential and recreational development, including a marina, a community, a water park and condos. The particular items the board wants to get input on is the leasing and building of condominiums. At no time would the Conservancy District be giving up or selling the land, but would enter a lease with a developer and the developer would then enter into leases for housing, according to information presented by RLCD attorney Larry Sanders.
