SESSER — One man died and another was injured following a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 57 near milepost 74 1/2 Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Illinois State Police, the accident occurred at 4:02 p.m. Tuesday when three vehicles were stopped in traffic in the northbound lane of I/57 and a 2007 Kenworth semi-truck, driven by Lawrence Rich, 39, of Montgomery, Minn., crashed into another semi-truck, driven by Donald G. Troyer, 62, of Nixa, Mo., causing Troyer’s truck to catch on fire.
Troyer’s truck hit another semi, driven by Dale E. Stumbo, 55, of New York, which in turn hit a 2009 Avalanche driven by David L. Payne, 57, of Woodlawn.
Rich was carrying a large load of steel pipe, the ISP reports, which came crashing into the cab of his vehicle causing fatal injuries.
Stumbo was transported to Benton Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Payne and Troyer were not injured.
The ISP continue to investigate the accident.
