MT. VERNON — —
Several appointments will be made by the Land, Tax and Appointments Committee of the Jefferson County Board previous to the full Board meeting today at the courthouse.
The LTA Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. and the Fiscal Committee will meet at 6 p.m. prior to the regular board meeting at 7 p.m. The committee meetings were postponed on Thursday due to wintry weather.
According to an agenda prepared in advance of the LTA Committee meeting, the committee will be making an appointment for EMA director, an appointment to the Greater Regional Planning and Development Commission, two appointments to the 911 Board, three appointments to the 708 Mental Health Board, three appointments to Crosswalk Community Action Agency, one appointment to Woodlawn Fire Protection District Board, and three appointments to the University of Illinois Extension Board.
Concerning the EMA position, County Chairman Robert White confirmed late last week that Steve Lueker, currently the assistant director, will be taking over the director's position. The position is currently held by Benton Fitzjerrells, who has agreed to step down and become the assistant director.
"It is not a lack of performance on the part of Benton, or no hard feelings. it's just the reality of what Benton is dealing with," White said. "Benton is committed to his role as a fire captain, which has prevented him from attending some of the meetings. He has accomplished a lot in that role. After meeting with both of them, Steve agreed to step up. Both of them have done a tremendous job in this agency for Jefferson County."
During the Fiscal Committee to follow, a quarterly report will be submitted by Regional Superintendent of Schools Ron Daniels and Treasurer Dan Knox will give an update on the county's finances.
During the regular board meeting, White will present several certificates of appreciation — two to individuals and two to organizations. Former Board member Rob Knutson will be recognized for his work on the recently formed Technology Committee; and Terry Knowles provided tablet training to board members at no charge. White will also salute Good Samaritan Regional Health Center and St. Mary Church for their new buildings.
An additional revenue program for the Animal Shelter will be recommended by the Public Safety Committee; approval of an engineering assistant job description will be brought by the Highway Committee; and an update on the Belle Rive bridge project is expected to be given by County Highway Engineer Brandon Simmons.
