MT. VERNON — —
For more than 11 years, the District 80 Central Kitchen has been helping make sure children continue to get a nutritious meal when school is not in session.
“This particular program is the Seamless Summer Feeding program,” said Food Service Director Darlene Brooks. “It’s an extension of the National School Lunch Program.”
The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered by the Illinois School Board of Education.
This year, children 18 years and younger will be able to get a hot lunch at five different locations throughout the city — the Mt. Vernon Township High School cafeteria; Jefferson County Housing Authority Youth Activity Center at 1000 South Ninth St.; Willow Springs Apartments at 4100 Willow Springs; Bethel Grade School cafeteria, 1201 Bethel Rd.; or Oak Grove Mobile Home Community Building at South 24th Street and Veterans Memorial Drive. Lunches will be available on weekdays beginning June 4, and continue until Aug. 3. No lunches will be available on July 4.
Serving will be from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at MVTHS; from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at JCHA; from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Willow Springs; from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Bethel Grade School; and from 11:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. at Oak Grove Village. There are no income guidelines for those who participate.
“The program during the summer is free and available to all children 18 years and younger,” Brooks stressed. “They get a full lunch over the summer. They do have to eat their lunch on site, and they can’t take any component out the door with them.”
“We have been doing this for many years, but there always seem to be parents out there that haven’t heard about it,” said Teri Clark of District 80. “We want people to know this service is available.”
Over the past four years, an average of 8,000 meals are served each summer vacation.
Additional information about the program is available by calling the Mt. Vernon City Schools Food Service office at 244-8090.
