MT. VERNON — Suzanne Arnt of Dix has been chosen as the city’s new assistant finance director.

“I believe the experience and training that Suzanne has will provide greater flexibility in the finance department to handle the finances of the city and the many projects we will be implementing and financing in the upcoming years,” City Manager Ron Neibert said.

Arnt will begin working in the finance department on Feb. 8.

“Ms. Arndt has extensive experience in many critical areas of governmental finance that makes her ideally suited to serve as the assistant finance director,” information from the city states. “Her specific areas of expertise include public accounting, budgeting and auditing.”

In December the council approved posting for the position, with the goal of having a person hired by February.

“At this time a senior staff member (in the finance department) is retiring April 30 after 35 years with the city,” Neibert told the council. “They are very knowledgeable, and we need to plan for their retirement.”

The council approved an amendment to the salary ordinance in preparation for hiring the new assistant finance director. The city began the search immediately, looking for someone specifically trained in finance and accounting. Neibert said Arndt was chosen from a field of about 20 applicants, which was narrowed down to four who were interviewed for the assistant finance director position. Arndt’s salary has been set at $40,000.

“Suzanne is currently working for an accounting firm in Marion, where she does auditing work, payroll work and general accounting functions,” Neibert said.

Arndt received her bachelor’s degree in accounting and a bachelor degree in finance from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. In 2006, she became a certified public accountant in the state and is now working toward a master’s degree in business administration from McKendree College.
