Cunningham to leave Crossroads

MT. VERNON — — Crossroads Community Hospital Chief Executive Officer Ed Cunningham will be leaving the hospital effective March 11.

Cunningham has accepted a new position as CEO of Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, a 367 bed facility.

"Crossroads Community Hospital is a special place for me, having served in leadership positions three separate times over the years," Cunningham stated. "I will always have fond memories of my time in Mt. Vernon and the successes we achieved as a team."

Cunningham oversaw the construction and renovation of the new Crossroads Community Hospital and recruited 20 new physicians during his most recent tenure with the hospital. He was also responsible for implementing a 30 minute guarantee program within the Emergency Department, according to information from the hospital.

"Ed laid the foundation, literally, of Crossroads' commitment to providing quality care to the Mt. Vernon Community," said Kathy Withers, chairman of the hospital board of trustees. "We are grateful for his work to expand our service to patients and wish him the best in Granite City."

Cunningham is involved in many community activities, and is the vice-chairman of the Rend Lake College Board of Trustees. He was appointed to the RLC Board in 2008, replacing Norma O'Daniel. He was elected to a six year term on the board in April 2009. He also serves on the RLC Foundation Board of Directors, a position he held prior to being appointed to college board. In 2009, he was honored by the Foundation  with the Presidential Award, given to a foundation member annually who has provided exceptional service.

Cunningham has been credited by the college as spearheading the Crossroads Hospital Scholarship Loan Program, which provides funds to RLC students to complete their nursing education and, in turn, students commit to two years of employment at Crossroads.

He said due to his move to Granite City, he will be resigning from the RLC Board.

Cunningham is also a past president of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Jefferson County Development Corporation Board of Directors, representing Crossroads Community Hospital.

A reception will be held in Cunningham's honor from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 5 in the Crossroads Community Hospital Conference Center. The public is invited to attend.

Mt. Vernon Police blocked a portion of North Ninth Street Wednesday morning about 11 a.m. after reports the brick facade of the apartment building at the corner of Ninth and Maple streets was falling to the ground. The bricks took out cable lines, awnings and were landing on the street.
