Mt. Vernon High School teachers ratified a new collective bargaining agreement Tuesday following federal mediation the day before with district administrators that produced the tentative agreement.
The new agreement now awaits full school board approval and will be discussed at the board’s next regularly scheduled meeting Oct. 15, Superintendent Mike Smith said.
Neither Smith nor Mary Beth Mezo, spokesperson for the negotiating team of the Mt. Vernon High Education Association, would discuss terms of the contract until it is fully approved.
It will replace a two-year deal that expired Sept. 1. Salary and length of the work day were the majors issues that had stalled talks since the sides formally met last on Aug. 23, Mezo has said.
“It was a clear margin,” Mezo said of the ratification vote among teachers.
Meanwhile, contract talks with clerical staff and aides at the high school are ongoing, Smith said, adding the district is in the process of scheduling more meetings. Negotiators last met Sept. 24 in collective bargaining to replace a three-year contract that expired June 30.
“We look forward to meeting with them soon as well and getting an agreement there,” Smith said.
