MT. VERNON — —
Cedarhurst Center for the Arts is calling for entries to the Shrode Fine Art and Craft Competition and Exhibit.
The exhibit will take place Feb. 25 to May 6, and all painting, drawing, printmaking, clay, fiber, mixed media, wood, fine jewelry and metal art are eligible for the competition. No photography will be accepted.
Work not acceptable is anything copied from published/recognizable artwork or photographs, items assembled from kits or pre-cut/pre-cast material; work produced in or based on another artist’s workshop or class, work that is a print of your original art piece or work unsuitable for family viewing.
The competition is open to all Southern Illinois artists age 18 and older living south of Interstate 70. Prizes are $300 for Best of Show; $150 for best of 2-dimensional; $150 for best of 3-dimensional; and $75 each for two honorable mentions.
An awards reception will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Each year, Cedarhurst invites an established fine arts professional, such as a regional university professor or museum curators, to serve as a judge for the competition. The judges view the entries one at a time and select the top works to be accepted into the exhibition.
Later, top winners are selected, though they will not be announced until the night of the opening reception.
This year, Nathaniel Steinbeck, Curator of Exhibitions from SIU-C University Museum will serve as the guest judge.
All entries must be delivered to the Shrode Art Center between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the week of Feb. 7 through 10. All entries must have an entry form attached.
Entry fees are $15 or $12 for Cedarhurst members. Each artist may submit up to three separate works of art for the single non-refundable $15 fee.
All work must be the original work of the artist, created within the past three years and not shown in any previous competitions or exhibitions at Cedarhurst or Shrode Art Center.
All 2-dimensional work must be framed with braided wire attached for hanging. Saw-tooth hangers, string, tape or aluminum wire are not acceptable. Use braided wire specifically made for the picture’s weight. There should be no temporary clear coverings and all 2-dimensional artwork should be framed and presented in a professional manner.
All artwork must be assigned a price for insurance reasons. If it is for sale, it must be marked as such; if it is not for sale, it should be marked “NFS.”
Artwork may not be removed before the exhibit closes.
Works will be rejected if the listed eligibility requirements are not met and the entry fee is forfeited.
A list of accepted works will be e-mailed to artists by Tuesday, Feb. 21. Artists are asked to provide an e-mail address. If an entry is not selected, artists will need to pick up works no later than Tuesday, Feb. 28; hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The Shrode Art Center is not responsible for any submissions after Feb. 28.
