Crossroads and YMCA host competition

The annual Lose to Win competition will start Jan. 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

MT. VERNON — — King City residents will have a chance to shave off some holiday pounds during the seventh annual Lose to Win competition.

The program, hosted by the YMCA of Jefferson County and Crossroads Community Hospital, will begin with a weigh-in from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the hospital.

A mini health fair will be set up at the hospital during this time, said Debi Richardson, Crossroads director of marketing and public relations.

“We’ve moved the weigh-in to the big conference room at the hospital instead of upstairs at the Y, so there will be a lot more room,” she said.

During the mini health fair, Crossroads staff will take blood pressure, pulse oximetry, blood glucose checks and BMI calculations free of charge, and staff will be on hand to discuss each participant’s BMI and goals, information states. Richardson said a reduced-price blood draw will be offered during the health fair as well.  

The program will last eight weeks, with a new midpoint weigh-in Saturday, Feb. 2, Richardson said.

“It’s not a requirement, but we will have some prizes and things for that day,” she said. “We’ll be announcing what those are a little bit later.”

This year will continue the tradition of offering Wednesday evening health education sessions during the program, Richardson said. The sessions will either be on a exercise or health education topic. Participants will also have access to the Crossroads Community Hospital Aquatic Center at 320 Broadway and the equipment and classes at the YMCA of Jefferson County.

The program will continue to offer cash prizes — $1,000 for first place, $600 for second place, $400 for third place and $250 for best team name, Richardson said. The cost to enter will be $100 per four-person team.

If a team that has won a previous year wants to participate again, a maximum of two people from a winning team may participate on the same team this year.

Participants may pick up registration forms at the YMCA or the Crossroads Community Hospital switchboard, Richardson said. Participants are encouraged to register before Dec. 21.

A Facebook page will be created for the program, Richardson said.
