MVTHS to request special use annexation

MT. VERNON — — Mt. Vernon Township High School will be requesting special use annexation to the City of Mt. Vernon for property it has acquired for the new school site at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Drive and Ambassador Road.

During the superintendent’s report, Mike Smith said MVTHS will be recommending special use annexation for the school property, which is now zoned agriculture. Smith said a series of public hearings will have to be held and then the high school can begin the application process through the city.

Smith also said the District is continuing to coordinate timelines with the city for infrastructure work needed at the site; and the District is continuing to work with utility companies and the city for electrical needs.

Smith also announced that he has been informed by officials from the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce that classroom grants will be available again this school year. Last year, the Chamber presented 12 grants of $300 each.

A graduation date of May 18 has been set by the District. Any use of snow days for the balance of the school year will not change the date, Smith said.

Several trips involving student participation were approved by the Board. Three students will be attending the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Festival today through Friday; six students and one chaperone will be participating in the Project Unify Youth Activation Summit March 15-17 in Bloomington; and eight students and three chaperones will be attending the Special Olympics State Basketball tournament in Bloomington March 16-17 if the local team qualifies.

Personnel hired by the District include: Emalee Chambliss as a math teacher for the remainder of the school year; Kimberly Stock as a guidance counselor for the remainder of the school year; David Bailey as a temporary custodian; and Robert and Laura Cooper were approved as volunteers for the Robotics Club.

Treasurer Angela Brentlinger reported the beginning cash balance of the district as of Dec. 1 was $8.7 million. The district had revenues of $411,000, and expenditures of $2.5 million, resulting in an ending cash balance on Dec. 31 of $6.4 million.
