Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and nighttime fatal crash rates for teens are nearly twice as high as daytime rates.
With these serious statistics in mind, Mt. Vernon Township High School’s Project Graduation is seeking help from the community to pull off this year’s substance-free party and keep local teens safer.
Project Graduation is a post-prom, all-night, substance-free event hosted at The Edge in Belleville, on May 18, 2013. The party has a variety of activities and entertainment. Food is served, and prizes are given to all students attending. Adult volunteers will chaperone the event.
The Project Graduation Committee has been raising money through 50/50 drawings and basket raffles at home basketball games, and a pork chop fundraiser is planned. However, with a goal of $8,000 to $10,000, the committee still needs help to offer this annual safe tradition to MVTHS seniors.
“This is a totally self-supporting program and we receive no funding from the school budget,” information states. “It is only through the generosity of businesses and individual that this event is possible.”
Last year, parents of students of the Class of 2012 banded together to host fundraisers for the event, beginning work in October.
