The United Methodist Children's Home is celebrating 100 years this year, and a gala celebration is being planned for April 27.
“We are inviting those who have supported us for years, and are encouraging past employees, residents and board members to the dinner, which is strictly to celebrate the ministry that is here now, its origins and those who make the ministry possible,” said Randy Winn, UMCH Development Director. “The bishop of our conference, Jonathan Keaton, will also be speaking at the event.”
The United Methodist Children's Home started Feb. 1, 1913.
“Even though 1913 isn't that long, official records are very spotty,” Winn said. “We were founded in Creal Springs at the turn of the century. At that time, Creal Springs was a booming town that rivaled Marion and Carbondale. In Creal Springs back then, there was a college, a seminary, a music school and eight trains daily going to and from Creal Springs. The minister, the Rev. Tompkins, we just learned, was an orphan himself, and that was the catalyst for starting the children's home. Back then, we were an orphanage.”
Winn said it was in 1921 the orphanage moved to Mt. Vernon.
“There was a big fire in 1921, and as a result, we moved to Mt. Vernon and purchased the land we have now.”
The history of UMCH will be presented during the Gala Centennial Celebration, and invitations are going out within the month to many of the past residents, staff and board members. The public is also invited to attend.
