The city's Main Street program has received a Gold Award from the state.
Mt. Vernon's program recognized for 100 percent re-investment reporting rates in 2012, according to information from the Illinois Main Street program. Other Main Street communities with 100 percent re-investment was Batavia, Crystal Lake, Dixon, Dwight, Elgin, Genoa, Hardin County, Jacksonville, Libertyville, Plainfield and Pontiac.
The Illinois Main Street program is part of a national movement to revitalize America's traditional downtowns, neighborhood business districts and urban corridors. In Illinois, the program is administered by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the Illinois Historical Preservation Agency and Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon serves as ambassador.
Those communities which had a 99 percent reporting rate was Beardstown, Bloomington, Cambridge, Moline, Quincy and Springfield.
Statewide, Illinois Main Street program communities had private investments of $38.3 million and public investments of $27.7 million. A total of 427 full-time jobs were created and 414 part-time jobs created. A total of 198 businesses opened in the downtown areas of Main Street communities, 96 businesses closed and 89 businesses were retained. There were 14,916 volunteers in Main Street areas throughout the state and 53,219 volunteer hours logged.
