MT. VERNON — As the holidays draw near, residents looking for new ideas can get a taste of home as well as help out the community at the Mt. Vernon Rotary Club’s inaugural Kitchen Tour on Saturday.
“The Rotary Club has a number of different programs we sponsor both locally and internationally,” said Rotary president-elect and event chairperson Brenda Malone. “This is a fundraiser that will help provide for Rotary-charitable programs. We’re making money to give it away. All the money goes back to the community and other charity programs.”
Six different homes will be showcased throughout the tour which also feature sample dishes and recipes.
Malone said the idea came about when members were brainstorming for a fundraiser.
“We began to think about a way to capitalize on membership and members have opened their homes in order to support Rotary,” she said. “We will have all different kinds of food that will be served on the tour — gumbo, southwest chicken soup, pasta, desserts — and all sorts of different cuisine that represent the different people involved.”
“I think kitchens are an intricate part of our home and reflects the personality of the home owner,” said sponsor Linda Woodrome of Designs by Linda. “People stay at home and entertain more than they used to, so kitchens have become an important part of the home because of that.”
Tickets are $30 for the tour, Malone said, and can be purchased from any Rotarian or can be picked up at Manpower or Personal Finance.
“You get to look at their home, taste food and hopefully be inspired with cooking ideas,” she added. “It should be an enjoyable afternoon.”
“They can look for ideas also,” Woodrome said. “And if they’re planning to remodel they might find something they really like — fresh ideas they can use in their own homes. I think we all like to look at other people’s homes.”
Home owners participating in the tour include, David Wood; Gino Federici; Woodrome; Jeff Howard; Eric and JoAnn Puntney; and Cedarhurst.
The Kitchen Tour will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
The Mt. Vernon Rotary meets at noon on Tuesdays at the First United Methodist Church.
