Staff Report
MT. VERNON — A Jefferson County man received major injuries Saturday after hitting a deer with his motorcycle.
Zachary David Sanders, 25, of Kell, was driving on Illinois Route 37 North near Old Salem Road when a deer ran out in front of him at 6 p.m. Saturday, according to the Illinois State Police. Sanders was taken to St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of injuries. The motorcycle received major damage.
The incident was one of more than a dozen vehicle/deer accidents reported to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend during the first of a seven-day firearm deer hunting season.
Earlier on Saturday, the ISP also responded to an accident on Interstate 57 north near mile marker 85.
According to the ISP, Nonso Mugbo, 15, of Chicago, was driving with a learner’s permit at 9:50 a.m. Saturday when the passenger car he was driving hit a rumble strip. His mother, Torziata Mougbogbo, 40, of Chicago, grabbed the wheel and overcorrected. Mugbo and his mother were both wearing their seatbelts and received minor injuries. They were transported to Crossroads Community Hospital for treatment. The car received major damage in the incident.
