Car/train accident results in DUI charge

Staff Report

MT. VERNON – A Belle Rive man was arrested for driving under the influence after his vehicle was hit by a train.

According to information from the Mt. Vernon Police Department, Owen O. Oliger told police he was driving west on Castleton Avenue approaching Rackaway Street shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday when he turned too soon and ran off the road. Oliger got his truck stuck on railroad tracks in front of an oncoming Union Pacific Railroad train and was able to exit the truck before the train hit it.

The operator of the train, Tommy Jeter of Salem, told police he saw Oliger’s truck on the tracks but wasn’t able to stop the train to avoid the crash.

Oliger’s truck received major damage. No injuries were reported.

Oliger was arrested at the scene on charges of driving under the influence, improper lane usage and operation of a uninsured motor vehicle.
