MT. VERNON — —
An act of vandalism at the District 80 Primary Center has been turned over to the Mt. Vernon Police Department for further investigation.
"We had a comment spray-painted in red on the front of the Primary Center building," confirmed Superintendent Mike Green. "We contacted the Mt. Vernon Police Department and they're investigating it. All of the students and staff are safe."
Green said the message covered about a 10- to 12-foot section on the brick walls of the Primary Center. He added the message was discovered by Assistant Principal Ellen Gibbs about 7:45 a.m. Thursday, who then contacted Principal Shannon Marler and Green, who were at the Muni-West Building with about 22 teachers who were being recognized by the Chamber of Commerce.
"We're concerned about the message and we are working cooperatively with the Mt. Vernon Police Department to try to find out who did it," Green said, adding the message was not racial in nature, and appeared to be directed toward staff and administration.
District 80 maintenance personnel cleaned up some of the spray paint, but the district enlisted the services of Rodney King of Hydro-Mole in Mt. Vernon to remove all of the graffiti.
"My maintenance guys got most of it done, but he (King) donated his services to do the rest of it," said Maintenance Supervisor Greg Livers. "That was very nice of him to donate his time and equipment."
Green added, "He just wanted to help the school out. He was disappointed, like me, that it happened. He did an outstanding job of removing the paint."
