MT. VERNON — —
The “Downtown Lowdown,” the third of informal gatherings in the downtown district, will be held Tuesday in The Granada Theater for the Performing Arts lobby.
Downtown Mt. Vernon Development Corporation Executive Director Cyndy Mitchell said The Granada board will give a presentation and the DMDC will discuss plans for its new event, First Fridays.
“We’re discussing an outdoor event with art, artists and musicians on 9th Street,” said Mitchell. “Right now, we are in the process of putting it together.”
The Downtown Lowdown event is sponsored by 9th Street Grill, who is offering free beverages and pastries. The gathering will be from 9 to 10 a.m.
Mitchell, in a release, said due to the successful attendance of the first two Downtown Lowdowns, DMDC is working on plans to host the gathering on a regular basis throughout the year. More information will be forthcoming as plans develop.
Tuesday’s lowdown will focus on The Granada, Mitchell added.
“The Granada board will give a presentation about the theater with time-period photographs and its renovation project as well as upcoming events and activities,” Mitchell explained.
DMDC will also update those in attendance about downtown events and projects throughout the district.
“We like to support the arts and feel strongly about our attachment to Cedarhurst,” Mitchell said. “The Granada is also an important part of that. There is a big attachment to the community with The Granada and we want to support that.”
Mitchell said when The Granada opened its doors in 1937, it’s acoustics were state-of-the-art and recognized nationally.
The annual Cruise Night and Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show, sponsored by DMDC, will be held in October once again this year, Mitchell said.
“It looks to be an annual October event in the future, in conjunction with the city’s Harvest Festival,” Mitchell noted. “The plan is to combine the two into one large event.”
The After 5 event will be held April 19, Mitchell said. The theme will be “Tin Ceiling Tours and Taste of Mt. Vernon.”
“There will be tours of recently renovated properties downtown.” Mitchell said.
DMDC is a voluntary board of citizens whose mission is to make downtown Mt. Vernon beautiful, user friendly, a great place to do business and a good place to establish residence.
