The city council is expected to move water tank monitoring into the 21st century at its meeting tonight.
The council will be considering a resolution to approve an agreement with BHMG Service Corporation for an electronic monitoring system for all the water tanks in the city.
"Now, we have a difficult time monitoring water levels and pressure in all the tanks," City Manager Ron Neibert explained. "It's an ink and graph system, very obsolete. Employees have to physically go down and check the graphs to see where the water levels are and the pressure. That's a problem. In many cases, the only indication we have that there is a severe water leak somewhere is the monitoring system when we see a drop off in a tank. But, we don't see it until someone physically goes down and checks it."
Neibert said the new system would be electronic and computer-based.
"The guys can check the tanks remotely from a (smart) phone," Neibert said. 'In addition, it has built in alarms built in the system that sends out a message if the levels or pressures go down."
The electronic monitoring system would keep tabs on the Times Square Mall water tank, the Eagle Court ground storage tank, the L&N tank and the high school tank.
BHMG would provide the cellular monitor, a new tank level pressure transmitter/gauge assembly, an outdoor rated enclosure with electrical components to be installed. AFter installation, the company would train the city personnel to operate and navigate the system website to monitor the tank levels.
The cost of the system and training is quoted at $18,000.
In other business, the council will be presented with a resolution to recognize former State Sen. John O. Jones for his years of service to Mt. Vernon and a presentation of a plaque for the 2012 Officer of the Year will be presented to the honoree by Mt. Vernon Police Chief Chris Mendenall.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. at the Rolland Lewis Community Building at Veterans Park.
