Local Veterans Day traditions will continue this year with a parade in Waltonville and a memorial event in Mt. Vernon.
The 27th annual Waltonville Veterans Day Parade will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at the Waltonville VFW Post #9153.
This year’s theme is “United We Stand.”
Joe Norris, parade organizer, said those who are interested in participating in the annual parade do not need to pre-register. There is no charge to participate.
“They just show up and we put them in the parade,” he said. “We start about 8 a.m. lining up and the parade starts at 10.”
He said anyone is welcome to participate — in the past, entrants have included floats, walkers with signs, marching bands, vintage cars, antique tractors and horses.
Norris said the parade route, about one mile in length, travels from the VFW post on the east side of Waltonville, through the high school and grade school and into the grade school gym, where a post-parade program will be held at about 11 a.m.
There will be music, a speaker and a 21-gun salute finale with the playing of taps, he said.
“After the program, we will have chili and fellowship at the VFW, once the parade is over,” he said.

The American Legion Post #141 in Mt. Vernon will co-host an event at Dale’s Harley-Davidson, said Post Commander Hank Wulf.
A ham luncheon for all veterans will be held Monday, Nov. 12, from noon to 2 p.m. at the business at 205 N. 44th St., Wulf said.
“We did a chili luncheon last year, which was sponsored by White Oaks Nursing Home,” he said. “They provided food and workers.”
Dale’s will be providing the meal and servers this year.
“Dale’s is always a big supporter of veterans, and we’re happy to have them,” Wulf said. “With these economic times, I’m sure the veterans will appreciate it.”
Veterans must provide proof of membership to a veterans organization, a veterans medical card, or other proof of being a veteran, Wulf said; the ham luncheon will be provided to veterans only.
