MT. VERNON —
The first knife show in Mt. Vernon was in 1982. Since it began, it has been the longest, continual running knife show in the state.
Larry Hancock, treasurer for the Jefferson County Custom Knife Club, is one of the organizers of the event. He said the first show had 16 vendors. Thirty years later, the show has almost 100 vendors. There is even one vendor who missed the first show, but has been to each show ever since.
“Many of the people that come to the show do so almost every year,” Hancock said. “Just about anything you can think of that has an edge on it is at the show.”
Vendors from Tennessee, Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois will be at the show, Hancock said. It will be split up into three different areas - custom, antique and factory made knives. He said the show will be arranged like that so that people who are interested in only one type of blade don’t have to spend a lot of time searching for a particular type among dozens of tables.
There are a lot of people who collect knives, Hancock said. Some custom made blades can even reach prices of up to $2,000. Hancock said the appeal of having a show that is just knives, instead of guns and knives or just one type is knife, is that it appeals to more people and there are no laws or restrictions like those with guns.
“The knife is probably the oldest tool that we have and still use today,” Hancock said.
The 30th annual Knife Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 3 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 4. Admission on Saturday is $3 and on $1 on Sunday. Children 10 and under are free, but must be accompanied by an adult. For more information call Hancock at 242-4514.
